Countries with Display bans - Australia

The Australian Capital Territory (ACT), New South Wales, Victoria, Western Australia and Tasmania, have all passed legislation prohibiting the display of tobacco products, with implementation due in phases between 2010 and 2013. A Federal government appointed taskforce recommends that display be prohibited in all states and territories.

Smoking prevalence

According to the Cancer Council of Victoria , smoking prevalence among Australians aged 18 and over stood at 19% in 2007, down from 34% in 1980.

The total cigarette market in Australia was estimated in 2008 to be 22.6 billion units, a decline of 18% since 1998.

Price

The retail selling price for a packet of cigarettes differs for different brands and pack sizes. As indication, a recommended retail price for a leading brand of 30 cigarettes is AUD$13.50. (approx. $11.70).
